Futuron 6875 Hovercraft alternate: Tiny Spaceship

It's been a few weeks since my last entry, and meanwhile I've been keeping tabs on Pluto; it's way cool. This is a false image of the surface's chemical composition.  It's the defining moment of our era.

And that is the era of Space exploration!

My unheralded return comes with another box alternate from Futuron's Hovercaft.

The alternate I have for you today is tiny spaceship.  It's a strong design, bringing to mind actual sets, as if it had presaged their arrival.

I almost fancy Tiny Spaceship more than Vector Detector

Or Super Nova II... but that may just be the Futuron enthusiast in me gawking at the colors.

Tiny Spaceship has the quintessential space canopy which defines the era's small spacecraft and manages to take this general shape off the well trod trail of repetition.  It is a tall vehicle due to its tilted canopy and underbelly rockets.  One might see a dune buggy profile in its lines.

Tiny Spaceship's diminutive design is sleek, and sweeps rearward to form a dramatic delta shape replete with detail.

Tiny Spaceship's aft section features 2 trans dark blue thrusters and 4 wingtips.  The whole model is well apportioned with eye-catching features shared equally throughout.

The canopy swings forward revealing the usual control scheme and offering easy access to the astronaut.  As an aside, I favor these hinged canopies, the era of breaking windows off was a step backward, so falling back into the recollection of collective youth to see advanced designs is singularly uplifting.

One cannot always tarry long on these pages, but if you're new to Futuron of My Youth stay a little longer and scroll on through.  I have posts for the entirety of Futuron and M-Tron's themes at your fingertips.

If you have any thoughts you'd like to share regarding these construction toys, you can do so in the comments.

My blog was built to fill a niche not offered by Brickset, Bricklink, Peeron, or ClassicSpace.  I can't say for sure if I've succeeded, but if you like what you see I hope you'll comment, or link to your MOCs, or brick blog.

Futuron: 6875 Hovercraft~exosuit alt

Today's alternate is from Hovercraft.

The alternate in question is a loader exosuit, kinda like that thing from Aliens when Ripley fights the big Momma.   The part selection leaves one component mismatched in color; it creates a cool pauldron effect.

The loader arms are balanced forward, and, due to the ballast, it will easily fall backward if nudged.
From the front it gives the operator a snug cockpit.

The rear is open and feels a bit underdeveloped.  The feet are fixed in place.

The loader is in its element hauling around bits and bobs... as you can see, there's a whole lot of 6875 left over.

A sorting job is never done.

This is a small straightforward build; at first it seems a tad disappointing but I've come to like it in the short time it's been built.

That's all for this week,

Futuron: Box Retrospective II

Hope you're all warm...I went to my parents home for Christmas and New Years and guess what...I've been stuck here for the past three days.  This is the primary reason for no new posts.  But I am not to be outdone by a lack of a camera, and the lack of an old Lego set.

Today I have another retrospective on Box art and alternate models.  This is supposed to be the easy part of my blog, but some of these box alternates are nigh unto impossible to find with a simple Google search.

Here goes.

I apologize for the small size, this was the only image I could find.  I hoped to find the images from the backs of the set boxes, but the packaging was glued to the yellow sheet, and as Paul Mison has observed from a box of 1621 the back of the box is blank.

Small as the images are, I can't comment as to their creativity, but I do want to point out the use of the black 4x6 plate on the trailer middle right.  What is going on there???

Interestingly, it appears the alternates were restricted to parts from each specific set to each specific alternate.  This may be fortunate for us, but i think it would have been more interesting if the big backing had combined builds, and these could have appeared on the backs of each set in question.

For all its faults Twin Wing Spoiler has a lot of colorful pieces and printed tiles.  Unsurprisingly the back alternate models are vivid.  I think the pair of robots are quirky, and would fit alongside the droid from 1621 Lunar MPV Vehicle. Other than that nothing here inspires, but as a showcase for the parts, this is a nice display.

Orion II Hyperspace

This one was interesting to me, because there is a special offer on the cover; which I found in one eBay listing, and nowhere else.  So, as you can see, here is a special offer for a free Lego Space watch; that's cool.  My Mother always required us to have analog watches as kids, but I could see myself being very excited about a watch like that as a kid.

Recently Paul Mison, Blogger at Welcome to the Futuron, offered his help in tracking down the back image for 6893 Galactic Starship, aka, SpaceProbe Transporter, aka, Orion II Hyperspace

Tada!  As a model Orion II Hyperspace is a great design with excellent features, and it has some great parts in the mix, but the balance of plates to bricks, and the types of bricks put some odd restraints on construction options.  The bottom left model seems most successful at being interesting, but top right seems clunky, and bottom right sort of reminds me of 6835 Spyrius Saucer Scout.  In general Futuron sets have been a mixed bag of parts; and having worked with the parts in this set extensively, I can safely add that this set isn't going to change my opinion.

Thank you for your help Mr. Mison.  I'm Grateful for your contribution.

I tried to find more information about the Lego Space Watch as well, but alas, it's also proving difficult to find anything about it.

I have to say, some of these alternates look very cool.  I especially like the wraparound window in the large image.  There's a ground based Laser cannon, a robot, and a typical spacecraft that could have succeeded as a set itself by my estimation.  Overall the robot seems underdeveloped, and the laser turret is a bit too thin, but give it a few more pieces from the collection and Hovercraft looks like a strong base from which to get started on some cool projects.

Crater Crawler Front

Crater Crawler Rear

Crater Crawler's alternates wouldn't be complete without a little space station.  That is one of the coolest things about Crater Crawler, it is only a few parts away from having everything necessary for a compelling Space Lab.  Beyond that the alternates include two rovers, which are overall successful, a scooter which is serviceable, two droids, a computer terminal, and a spacecraft.  The Spacecraft struggles with a selection of parts that aren't favorable to such a construction, note the lack of wings, and the forced misuse of the central hinge as it creates asymmetry where it fails to make sense.  Overall this set of alternates gives a good sense of what the Crater Crawler is made of, and also serves to highlight its limitations as a set.

That's all I have for today folks, I trust you will all strive to stay warm in these unseasonably cold temperatures; and so for now, I bid you adieu.

Futuron: 6875 Hovercraft

Today's installment in Futuron is a this little spaceship called Hovercraft which is about as similar to ACVs or Air Cushion Vehicles as that British show's classy little van.

http://i4.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article2098202.ece/ALTERNATES/s615/Top-Gear-HoverVan-2098202.jpg

Now, that's better.  and the point is, 6875 Hovercraft is nothing like an ACV. But where there's a will, there's a way.
http://michaelbott.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Screen-Shot-2013-06-29-at-18.11.48-629x240.png

Naming conventions aside Hovercraft is a good example of the Futuron theme; It looks more like a domed canopy to which small scooters and multiple guns have been applied.  The front of the ship has six guns facing forward if you ignore that the little side pieces are actually small ships; and those guns are probably just running lights.  I ignore that.  Everything pointing forward has to be laser weaponry by child logic; the very best kind if I may say so.  And so this ship is just bristling with armaments.  Your Blacktron ship can't withstand firepower of this magnitude!

The back of the ship sports little round dishes that are by all indications part of the propulsion.  They are part of a heavily concentrated section of aesthetically minded black pieces in a small area; a rarity in Futuron.

Furthermore, the ship is propelled by four white rocket engines mounted beneath the ship in a diamond pattern.

The arrow tile indicates an action.

 Swing the latch forward

The cockpit lifts up, providing the primary moving feature.

The design attempts to create a bubble dome around the pilot, a design which can now actually be achieved perfectly with this piece (circa 2010-present).

Lot ID: 46333409 Part No: 87752 Name: Windscreen 6 x 4 x 2 1/3 Bubble Canopy with Handle

Isn't progress wonderful.  The Lego Group keeps improving things, I mean, hurr durr, when I was a whippersnipper we had to use our imaginations and build our space ship canopies out of 2x4 red bricks.  Thanks, but no.  I am however part and parcel to my age, and I favor the more angular windows such as these from my childhood merely as a matter of prejudice.

Getting back to Hovercraft, it sports these two space scooters that present a really cool idea executed in a mediocre fashion.   They're kind of chunky and too big looking as seperate vehicles, though they do give the main model a nice look.

These removable segments can reattach to each other.

The result is this rather uninspiring super-scooter

Hovercraft is decently big thanks to its long 2x16 plate which forms the basis of the model.  It's perfect for a kid's hand, and it provides a nice hefty weight to give you that extra sense of value.  It's not my favorite, but it's not bad, ending up somewhere in the middle of the theme visually.

There are certain pieces within Hovercraft which are peculiar to itself in the Futuron theme.

This white jumbo plate/brick is exclusive to this set in Futuron, albeit two can be had in black elsewhere in Futuron.

Here is the inverted corner slope which pairs well to the upright slopes in Lunar MPV Vehicle.  You get two of them in white, and there are no other variants in Futuron.  It is an uncommon part, but it's been around for a while so it is not too hard to find.

Hovercraft has two of this rather common piece, again in white, and for our purposes they are the only two in Futuron.

That wraps up the assortment of five Futuron specific parts.  Alas, none of them are unique, although three of them are not especially common.

Now this is how you build a hovercraft, Lego style...

Okay, Hovercraft jokes to the side, here's a space pod for quick transport.  It's a bit square, but, pretty cute.

6875 Hovercraft has only three prints in the entire set, an arrow, and the shirt/smiley face.  Overall it has a nice spread of engine parts and spacey bits, but it seems very heavy on plates, once again to the detriment of brick selection.

Final Verdict: B+
Pros: Two canopy windows, lots of engines in white, good main model
Cons: Few prints, chubby scooters,  yellow spaceman
