Futuron 6953: Cosmic Laser Launcher: The other three box alternates

I feel like there have been a lot of breaks in posting recently... Anyhow, to ensure I get back to the usual business of reviewing Blacktron models I'll get down to the remainder of Cosmic Laser Launcher's alternates all at once because I have pictures and they've been ready for a month.
At some point I also want to update the main post... it's looking worse for wear as I've continued improving my methods.

So Alternative 2... because I did one already.

Cosmic Bottle Rocket tracking HQ

As you can see I added an, in set, technic axle to make the rocket look like it's propelling upward, and I assume the little car will help the station track the rocket's trajectory.  This feels like massive overkill for the hobbyist pursuit of toy rocket launching.

The main base has some catwalks and computer terminals as well as two movable antennae, but the lack of interactive bits comparable to the scale is just a bit dampening to the otherwise attractive layout.  I like the curved bricks for texture... they remind me of the radar dish flourishes from 6990.

The Car has a massive footprint and a hefty tracking radar which spins to improve signal reception.

While I like the conceit and see potential in this wheel configuration it just doesn't look very good, or offer good play value for its size.  It also doesn't turn well when moving on a flat surface.

While I'm on this alternative... have you ever played with model rockets, they're a lot of fun... kinda like fishing, once you launch the rocket in the air or cast the lure in a rocky river, you might never see your lure or rocket again.  Also brambles.

I prefer spending my time and money on Lego... sure, you may lose these things too... but at least you can check the vacuum cleaner bag, I still remember finding my clear diver snorkel mask in there when I didn't even know it was missing... save!

Bricklink Entry: Diver Mask Clear if you've never heard of these sets... they were cool, I still have the 6555 Sea Hunter because that's the kind of pocket change I had back in my day.  My sawfish sharks nose was one of my bro's chewtoys sadly... so it's a bit nicked in the nose.

Where was I?  Oh yes, and the point of that thing about hobby rockets is that I don't much care for hobbies where things going missing is an essential part of the experience.

My boy scout buddies and I did recover some of the rockets, and I have a crazy memory about a guy recovering my favorite lure from the river by casting his line with precision into the Thornapple river... like this guy was a pro or something... he did it in one try.  And I never let my dad borrow that lure again.

Alternative 3:

An oven shaped robot with mitts for hands and Rudolph the rednosed biplane.

This spaceship is OK... I kinda like the other one from the back of the box more, but... there's some good stuff here.  The main ship uses the two weird space panel windows in trans blue.  By my own opinion they're kind of an awkward shape and thus begging the question; what should I build with them?  And the biplane rigging is essentially built up via the angled girders. These girders get you some height very fast; 5 bricks worth.  The girders are the only way to make a model like this from the set, the supply of bricks is minuscule.

You may have noticed the robot head snugged into the back there... I modded the design to carry it.

Here's the the way the box alt is built.

And I changed very little.  See the 2 2x4 slopes... note the altered positions and that's it.  Now there's room for the robot.

And it looks like this in the back.

It actually stays in too.  Now you have a robot transporter!

The robot is assembled much like the Cosmic Laser Launcher's toaster oven rocket.

The robot's head doesn't move, but the arms do.  Though, they're kinda... I'm sure I could've modded something for the bot to hold... but I didn't and he isn't built right now.  The hands aren't very interesting... moving on.

The spaceship has a good look, I think a beefier substructure could improve the overall feel.  The models construction options were hampered as always by Futuron's plate dependent construction ethos.

So, that's it for the second alternative, Overall, I think this one came out looking pretty good, it's not a pretty model, but it's adaptable and provides some fun possibility's which encourage ongoing ideas in the pursuit of improvement.

Alternative 4:
This model is very tall, and quite under built. The central platform can move to the left and to the right, and at first I didn't really know what to make of this base.
Like a bridge over lunar craters, I will... ahem, moving on.

Not much to say about the car, it's got a hinged pair of turntables... kewl.  What's up with that?

The platforms have some sensor arrays, and two console centers.

So I did this.
Spaceship Repair Station
You know what they say... use your head and while you're at it lay a spaceship on me.
It's absurd and I like it.

I chose 6886 Galactic Peacekeeper because it was the only set that fit... I think 6875 Hovercraft had an engine conflict underneath.  So it missed the repair appointment.  You could always use it to repair your own design.  I went with the shiny and familiar option.

Overall, with this, no mods needed, change to the repair tower I declare this alternative my favorite; It's still in need of some major structural improvements.  Look at those girder stacks; more can be done to make this base look really cool.

Conclusion:
I don't think Cosmic Laser Launcher was made with finished looking alternatives in mind, all of these models felt like table-scraps.  They're occasionally brilliant for exploring what's possible, but sorely lacking in fit and finish.

Futuron 6875 Hovercraft alternate: Tiny Spaceship

It's been a few weeks since my last entry, and meanwhile I've been keeping tabs on Pluto; it's way cool. This is a false image of the surface's chemical composition.  It's the defining moment of our era.

And that is the era of Space exploration!

My unheralded return comes with another box alternate from Futuron's Hovercaft.

The alternate I have for you today is tiny spaceship.  It's a strong design, bringing to mind actual sets, as if it had presaged their arrival.

I almost fancy Tiny Spaceship more than Vector Detector

Or Super Nova II... but that may just be the Futuron enthusiast in me gawking at the colors.

Tiny Spaceship has the quintessential space canopy which defines the era's small spacecraft and manages to take this general shape off the well trod trail of repetition.  It is a tall vehicle due to its tilted canopy and underbelly rockets.  One might see a dune buggy profile in its lines.

Tiny Spaceship's diminutive design is sleek, and sweeps rearward to form a dramatic delta shape replete with detail.

Tiny Spaceship's aft section features 2 trans dark blue thrusters and 4 wingtips.  The whole model is well apportioned with eye-catching features shared equally throughout.

The canopy swings forward revealing the usual control scheme and offering easy access to the astronaut.  As an aside, I favor these hinged canopies, the era of breaking windows off was a step backward, so falling back into the recollection of collective youth to see advanced designs is singularly uplifting.

One cannot always tarry long on these pages, but if you're new to Futuron of My Youth stay a little longer and scroll on through.  I have posts for the entirety of Futuron and M-Tron's themes at your fingertips.

If you have any thoughts you'd like to share regarding these construction toys, you can do so in the comments.

My blog was built to fill a niche not offered by Brickset, Bricklink, Peeron, or ClassicSpace.  I can't say for sure if I've succeeded, but if you like what you see I hope you'll comment, or link to your MOCs, or brick blog.

Futuron 6885 Crater Crawler ~ Alternate 2

This alternate was an insane challenge as I managed to finish it in about a dozen ways, until I found one I was happy with.  I kept going until the chassis was secure and proportions looked correct.

I don't promise to have gotten it exact, but in a picture like this that may not be possible.  The point made is not that this must be done one way, but that I found many roads which lead to something approaching the finished product.  When I realized how many variations I could do with just 98 pieces I began to realize how much thought must have been put into this one design.

What can I say about the car?  Dang son, it looks good!

From a company product point of view it's easy to feel why this vehicle didn't become a set in Futuron's lineup. It has precious few grip points, and the window tips up at slight hand pressure, the wheels easily lose traction when the hand pressure is too feathery.  The window can be a grip point, but then you will have fingerprints all over it, and slight lift will open the cockpit.  Best bet...find a slope and let it roll away.

Given my difficulty finessing this thing I'll reveal the secrets behind those tyres.  I utilized zoom in my picture viewer...but even that wasn't able to get me much of a view of anything.   Ready? grab your megaphones and woila!

I puzzled this out for over an hour and had a few other methods which went to the cutting room floor because things like the upper headlight cluster had incorrect proportions.

Even so, the chassis is the one area I'm feeling dicey on...but everything's secured...car's not crumbling.  I can't see it anyway, so I selected to let it be and added the tapered plate for aesthetic bulking up and sleekness.

Drivers start your engines! Today marks the beginning of this rotation's galaxy famous Saturn 5000 Titan Dakar.

It looks like a crater crashing formula inspired dune buggy.

Check out this boss exhaust system as it drives away... Man I just love the transparent canopy in this set...my younger self wanted corner space windows so bad...the older self obliged.  Younger self was NOT wrong!

So far this is the coolest box derived alternate I've had the pleasure of deducing from a Futuron set, but there are many more waiting to be challenged; with that I end this second alternative review of 6885 Crater Crawler.

Until next time,

Futuron 6885: Crater Crawler~Alternate

We put the Saturn in Main Base.

I ran into a special 'problem' with 6885's alternates.  The designers apparently had the spare bits on hand and they used them... guess what I didn't get when I imported this thing?  And no one's inventoried the spare bits 6885 comes with...so I almost don't trust that I won't miss something making these alternates.

After my initial confusion I peeroned the list of space sets with the tiny blue dot and pulled from the one set I had readily available to provide the spare bit.  harumph!

Did you know this blue dot was only released in one set each year from 1987-1991?  It was a pretty special bit until '92.

1987

1988

1989 spare obtained here

1990

1991

From 92 onward the blue dot received a more regular appearance... and now it's downright common, but by gum that was an itty bitty bother.

First off the box alternate line is this scooter launch base.

This is a small sample of what Crater Crawler can offer the collection...prefab corner walls and prefab rounded windows, it's a mini base wrapped over a truck bed.

The robot seems to be waiting for something...

Monotonous robot voice--Weee!--  Take over?  Pfft, more like, cause minor inconveniences.

"I knew I shouldn't have set it to fun mode!"

monotonous robot voice--Silly astronaut... pursuit is futile... Ha ha. Ha ha.--

"I'll reprogram this little guy to be boring and boom bodda bing.  That oughta resolve our differences."

Monotonous Robot--01 11 00, access command line interface...press any button to continue.

Scooters come in multiple flavors and colors...Each scooter has one hand operated booster.  Not the most balanced design, but for short trips they seem acceptable.

Longer trips are better aboard this little speeder.
That sums it up.  I like this little base.  It has a fair bit of play value to it on its own and the idea can easily be expanded upon.

Until next time
